Descendant of Jewish Refugees Visits Again

On the morning of June 20, Brian Bloomfield, a descendant of Shanghai’s Jewish refugees from the United States, visited the Shanghai Jewish Refugees Museum with his family.

Brian's father, Peter Bloomfield, now 83 years old, was born in Shanghai in 1942 and immigrated to the United States with his family in 1947. This visit marks Brian's second visit to the museum, following his first visit on June 19, 2024. Brian currently serves as the principal of Lyndon Institute, a private high school in Vermont, which has maintained a 15-year partnership with schools in China and established international departments in public high schools in Shaoxing, Hefei, and Fuzhou. Due to his professional commitments, Brian shared that he anticipates more opportunities to visit China in the future.

During the visit, Brian expressed his dedication, both as a descendant of Jewish refugees and as an educator, to actively promote museum-school collaboration projects in his partner schools, fostering deeper student understanding of this significant history. He also mentioned that upon returning to the United States, he plans to assist his father in recording an oral history video to share Peter’s experiences and reflections as a refugee in Shanghai with the museum. Brian’s wife, Carla, shared that she has been conducting research on the history of Jewish refugees seeking refuge in Shanghai and is willing to share the websites and materials she has collected with the museum. Following the visit, accompanied by museum staff, the Bloomfield family revisited Peter’s former residence on Houshan Road, reconnecting with the past.
