Board Member of the Hong Kong Holocaust and Tolerance Centre Visit the Shanghai Jewish Refugees Museum
On January 29, 2025, Director Chen Jian received a visit from Mr. Geoffroy Wallier, who is the board member of the Hong Kong Holocaust and Tolerance Centre (“HKHTC”) , and his two daughters at the Shanghai Jewish Refugees Museum.
The Hong Kong Holocaust and Tolerance Centre (“HKHTC”) is a Hong Kong-based, non-profit organization. It was established in 2011 and is the first institution in China dedicated to the education of the Holocaust. Founded by Hong Kong residents, its aim is to raise awareness of the Holocaust in Hong Kong and the surrounding areas and promote related historical education.
The Hong Kong Holocaust and Tolerance Centre is dedicated to producing materials in English, Chinese and other Asian languages on combating anti-Semitism and other forms of discrimination. It also actively plans public exhibitions, holds educational seminars and brings Holocaust survivors to Hong Kong to provide rare historical education opportunities in Asia on this subject. The centre also offers educational content and opportunities on other regional genocides, such as the Nanjing Massacre and the Cambodian Genocide.
Since its inception, HKHTC representatives have visited more than 50 local and international schools in Hong Kong. This includes screenings of Holocaust related films and visits with Holocaust survivors who have shared their experiences with pupils. In addition, the Board members have been guest speakers at special assemblies and they have assisted teachers with curriculum-related enquiries.
The HKHTC also organized lectures and hosted visiting academics when running Holocaust themed seminars. Other activities include running annual commemorative events for the United Nations Holocaust Memorial Day and Yom HaShoah. The HKHTC is a full member of The Association of Holocaust Organisations which links the Centre with other major Holocaust education and survivor organizations globally.
After this meeting, the Shanghai Jewish Refugees Museum and The Hong Kong Holocaust and Tolerance Centre reached a consensus that they would be jointly committed to maintaining cooperation in promoting education and awareness of the Holocaust in the future, thereby enhancing tolerance and understanding among people and making positive contributions to our society and future generations.
