Sivanka Dhanapala, representative of the United Nations high commissioner for refugees (UNHCR) in China, and Chen weiyu, the deputy representative of UNHCR in China, visited the Shanghai Jewish Refugees Museum on June 20, 2018. Mr. Dhanapala visited the museum with great interest, and he spoke highly of the historical collection, the storyline of exhibition and the work of the museum. He said: "Today is the first international refugee day I spent in China, no other place is better."
At the same time, Mr. Dhanapala expressed surprise that such a good museum had not yet received the appropriate attention internationally. He believes that the museum expresses, through historical stories, the strong desire to eliminate refugees from their roots, which is consistent with the idea of the UNHCR. He said he would be happy to introduce the museum to senior UN officials, including UN secretary general Antonio Guterres and UN high commissioner for refugees Glendale, and invite them to visit the museum to experience the moving history, as well as to help raise its international profile.
Mr. Dhanapala also said that UNHCR highly appreciates China, as one of the five permanent members of the UN Security Council, for seeking a political solution to the refugee issue and for its commitment to addressing both the symptoms and root causes.
