2025 Nobel Laureate Joel Mokyr Visits the Museum

Joel Mokyr

On March 29, 2026, Joel Mokyr, winner of the 2025 Nobel Memorial Prize in Economic Sciences and Professor of Economics and History at Northwestern University (USA), paid a special visit to Shanghai Jewish Refugees Museum.

During the tour, Professor Mokyr carefully viewed the historical photographs and artifacts on display, and listened attentively to the guide’s introduction to the living conditions of Jewish refugees upon their arrival in Shanghai and their daily interactions with local Chinese residents. He expressed keen interest in the history of the Chinese people providing shelter to Jewish refugees during World War II.

After the tour, Professor Mokyr paused for a long time in front of the message left by Yitzhak Rabin, former Prime Minister of Israel. He stated that Shanghai had offered precious refuge to the Jewish nation during those dark years, and that the Chinese people had done a great kindness to the Jewish people. He also praised the museum for its remarkable efforts in preserving this period of history.
