Kurt Wick Library

The library contains the collection of books donated by Kurt Wick, a former Jewish refugee. There are 7959 catalogued books, covering 22 categories based on the Chinese Library Classification. Most of them are in English, and a small number are in German and Hebrew.

Kurt was born in Vienna. When he was one and a half years old, his parents took him and his 4-year-old brother to Shanghai to seek refuge. When in Shanghai, Kurt took classes at the Kadoorie School and studied at the Mir Yeshiva in the Beth Aharon Synagogue. In early 1943, the family moved to a house at the intersection of Alcock Road (now An Guo Road) and East Yuheng Road (now East Yu Hang Road) in the Designated Area. After World War II, the family moved to London.

Kurt has the hobby of collecting books about Jewish history and culture. In February 2019 when he first returned to Shanghai after 71 years, Kurt visited the Shanghai Jewish Refugees Museum with his family and decided to donate his lifelong collection of books to the museum.
