Directory of Jewish Refugees-Shanghai Jewish Refugees Museum

This document, the Directory of Jewish Refugees, belonged to Margot Schuster and Arno Schuster. It was donated on March 29, 2017.

The registration time stamped on the directory was April 2, 1940. Information about the mother and son, such as their address in Shanghai, their level of education, their religion and means, had been recorded on the directory. In the nationality column, it said "withhold", which means “unclear, with reservations”.

In 1939, Mrs. Schuster and her husband came to Shanghai with Arno, who was more than one year old, from Munich, Germany. Although the Designated Area was established three years after, the Japanese authorities had already carried out a detailed investigation of the situation of Jewish refugees in 1940 so that it would be easier for them to deal with the refugees later on.
