Cartoons Featuring Kano Ghoya

This set of collection consists of seven cartoons designed by Fritz Melchior. These were printed at the Festa Paper MFG. CO. on Ward Road. Kurt Duldner, a former Jewish refugee, donated these cartoons to the museum.

When Jewish refugees in the Designated Area in Hongkou applied for exit permits, the Japanese officer Kano Ghoya would make things difficult for them. These cartoons reflected Ghoya's arrogance, insolence and rudeness from every aspect, and expressed the Jewish people’s mockery of Ghoya after the war.

The designer, Fritz, a German Jewish artist, fled to Shanghai on an Italian cruise ship called “SS Conte Verde”. During his stay in Shanghai, he married Ursula Perlhoefter and founded a troupe together. After the war, he went to the United States with his family.

Kurt fled to Shanghai with his family in 1940. He once lived at No.1106 Zhoujiazui Road and No.60 Kunming Road, and worked for Chinachem Enterprises in the Sassoon Building. He settled down in the United States in 1950. In October 2011, Kurt and his wife visited Shanghai, and he donated his driver's license and the cartoons, which he had kept for more than 60 years, to the museum.
