Eva's Residence Certificate

The paper residence certificate was issued by the Shanghai First Police Bureau on June 7, 1944. The residence certificate showed that the holder, Eva Teicher, was 13 years old and lived at No.39, Lane 781, Tangshan Road.

In 1943, after the Japanese authorities established a restricted sector for stateless refugees in Shanghai (also known as the Designated Area), they issued “residence certificate” to non-Chinese residents in the area. There was a bright yellow bar on the top of the certificate, which indicated the Jewish identity of the holder. The yellow bar reminded Jewish refugees of the horror of being separated by the Nazis. This object reflects the Japanese authorities’ management inside the Designated Area.
