The Ship Ticket of the Betty’s Family

This ticket from the Japanese ship company named N. Y. K. LINIE was donated by Betty Grebenschikoff in 2013. This ticket, from Naples, Italy, to Shanghai, China, recorded the names of four members of Betty's family, including her father Max Kohn, her mother Olga Kohn, her sister Edith Kohn and Jese Kohn (Betty’s former name), as well as their dates of birth, places of birth, residence and other information. The price of the ticket was 2844 Reichsmark, and Betty and her sister only had to pay half the price. Her father also had deposited 200 Reichsmark cash in advance.

In January 1939, the German Nazis decided to "interview" Max, stipulating that he should report for duty on a specified date. On February 27, just two days before the specified date, Max spent a lot money on two tickets for first-class cabins on the ship of Kashima Maru. On May 21, the family went to Shanghai.

The ship ticket saved the Betty’s family and witnessed the hardship of Jewish refugees fleeing the Nazis persecution during World War II.
